Noticed this fancy place for fish soup on the social media and paid a visit to the Milkfish restaurant in city area. Milkfish, as the fish itself, is one of the most popular fish in Taiwanese cuisine where popular presentations include as a topping for congee, pan fried, braised, and as fish balls. It is valued for its versatility as well as its tender meat and economical price.
We ordered the 2 pax set ($40++), which included 2 bowls of milkfish soups (fyi the size is smaller than the ala carte one), 1 grilled milkfish belly, 1 oriental salad in vinegar dressing, 4 pcs deep fried prawn roll, 6 pcs marinated chilled tomatoes, 2 choice of rice/noodles (the crispy rice sprinkles 'Pao Fan' is recommended!).
Their signature soup broth was smooth and milky with good amount of milkfish, prawn, clam and pork. The broth was flavorful but tasted just like a seafood-pork broth rather than one that is cooked purely with milkfish. I was expecting to taste the latter since the theme was afterall, milkfish. A closer read to the menu will reveal the fact that they actually outsourced the broth to Ao Broth.
The fried prawn roll (not in the photo) is like ngo hiang with prawn was fragrant but salty.
The grilled milkfish belly is highly recommended as it was fresh and the meat has pockets of soft belly fat.
Overall, the portion is more than enough for two of us and we were quite satisfied with the food and the dining atmosphere. However, it is not something that we can have everyday like fish soup/yong tau foo considering its price point.
