Isshin Machi 一心一町: Wide Variety of Authentic Taiwanese Food Reviewed from a Taiwanese Perspective

$

There are so many restaurants/stalls claiming themsleves selling Taiwanese food in Singapore but I always hear my Taiwanese friends complaining about how non-Taiwanese or not authentic it was. So it was great to have one accompanying with me to Isshin Machi to have some feedback.
I personally like the Hakka-style braised meat rice 客家滷肉飯 ($9+) and the crispy chicken cutlet 脆皮炸雞腿排 ($9.80+) which is not overly seasoned. Both of these are quite authentic according to my Taiwanese Friend especially the chicken cutlet, it reminds him of the ones he get from those bento shops which are not easy to find here in Singapore.
He likes the Signature Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodles 台灣蔥燒牛肉湯麵 ($12+) which was switched to Guan Miao Noodles 關廟麵 (+$1+). The broth is quite authentic, beef shank is well stewed while the thick and chewy Guan Miao Noodles soaked with beef soup brought this bowl to a new level.
Moon Shape Prawn Cake 月亮蝦餅 ($11+) is an interesting dish most Singaporeans may not know. It is a common "Thai" Food invented by a Taiwanese chef that would definitely be found in any Taiwan's Thai Restaurants. He was quite disappointed on this dish, the skin was not crispy enough, the prawn paste was a bit too much and the Thai sauce was not right. To me, it is like a new dish that can be introduced to Ngoh Hiang Stall. Oh well, it is not really a Taiwanese food but you can still give it a try.
Cucumber with Spicy Garlic Dressing 蒜辣黃瓜(4.30+) is a refreshing appetizer commonly found in Taiwan noodle stores. While usually served in cucumber batons, the taste is the same and looks more atas.
Pork Wontons with Fiery Chili Oil 紅油抄手 (6pcs/$6) is not the normal spicy kind we find in Din Tai Fong. It is more like the sour version of it. It reminds him more of 白油抄手 in Taiwan.
At Isshin Machi, Salt and Pepper Green Beans 椒鹽四季豆 ($5) is considered a appetizer whereas in Taiwan is usually a dish in Zichar or as beer snacks. The raw garlic, black pepper taste and peanuts should go along with the Taiwan Beer sold here.
Overall, prices aren’t exactly cheap even if you compare to other Taiwanese food sold in Singapore but for sure these are guaranteed authentic Taiwanese food here in downtown area.

Bedok-style Bak Chor Mee at downtown: Soon Heng Pork Noodles 顺兴肉脞麵 vs. Famous Eunos Bak Chor Mee 友诺士肉脞面

Bedok-style Bak Chor Mee, well known from the stalls at Fengshan Food Centre, is the thick soup version of Bak Chor Mee that is different from others. I personally prefer this over dry BCM but find it not that easy to see one outside east area. We happened to come across two of them in downtown area and here is the comparison in our opinion.
Soon Heng is located near Outram Park MRT station. We ordered the large ($5.50) which comes with a few wantons, minced meat and meatballs. Nonetheless, the broth is pretty flavorful and subtly sweet.

You can try out Famous Eunos Bak Chor Mee without having to travel all the way to the East cos it has opened an outlet at Hawker Street Ion Orchard. This is the signature bowl ($5.50) which comes with plump wantons and firm meatballs. Toss some chili padi into the soup for some heat and it will transform into a pretty shiok bowl of noodles. Compared to Soon Heng, the broth was not as thick and it comes with coriander. Not sure if there was quality difference from the original hawker.
Taste wise, we would prefer Soon Heng's broth more as it was more flavorful. But if you are looking for a more comfortable aircon dining space, you may go to Famous Eunos @ ION Orchard.

Their mission is to inspire and empower healthy eating for everyone from women to men and children alike. The product range include Granolas, Overnight Oats and Nut butters. All Revive products are natural, handmade, free of artificial preservatives and made in Singapore.
The granolas come in five flavors such as Honey Granola Pistachio + Puffed Rice and they are combinations not commonly found outside. Unlike the usual store-bought granolas, the Matcha Granola + Cashew Almond which I’ve tried, come in large clusters and are not too sweet. Perfect for snacking like chips!
Running out of time in the morning, you can rely on their overnight oats which just require addition of milk and setting of the mixture overnight in the fridge. Very convenient and best of all, there is no added sugar. Each bag makes 6 servings.
Last but not least, don’t miss the nut butters as they are FREE from added sugar, salt, hydrogenated oils and palm oil. This implies that the nut butters are suitable for all ages, including babies who are not supposed to have any added sugar/salt in their meal. INDOCIN- Delivery-only Butterfly Pea Nasi Lemak and Artisan Nasi Liwet

When it comes to delivered food, it can either arrive in a bad shape or at least not as what it was shown on the menu. And of course, most likely it is cold already.

The delivery design by INDOCIN is the best I have ever seen so far with well designed boxes for you to easily heat up and insta-worthy as well. We ordered for a Sunday lunch party and everyone was satisfied with the food.
The grand box can feed 2-3 pax. My favourite was the rice (both nasi liwet and nasi lemak) and the ayam penyet. Beef rendang and sambal babi can be skipped. They also gave very generous amount of ikan bilis and peanuts.
There is also other dishes such as Fresh Handmade Bakmie and Sayur Lodeh (Indonesian Vegetable Curry). Does not look that good compared to boxes above are still delicious.

Gustoso Ristorante Italiano: Good 1-1 Lunch Promotion

Located in a queit neighborhood along the shop houses on Jalan Selaseh, Gustoso Ristorante Italiano is a Italian Restaurant opened by celebrity chef, Peter Neo. Not a very convenient place to get to via public transportation, but it was still fully booked on a weekday lunch time. Decided to takeaway as we did not reserve in advance.

The 1-for-1 Lunch promotion includes most items from the regular menu and the lower-priced item will be free.
We had the Seafood Risotto and Seafood Aglio Olio which costed us $26 nett in total thanks to the promotion. Due to the takeaway, the food may not be tasted the best but they were still above average. The variety of seafood was lacking in the pasta, so was the heat from chilies which were absent.

There is still a lot more on the menu including their pizzas and meat dishes. Maybe we'll try to dine-in next time if promotion is still provided. Original price? Maybe not.

Clan 7 七公館: Elevated Chinese cuisine (NTP+/CC14 Lorong Chuan)

Located in the new mall NTP+ right next to MRT Lorong Chuan Station, Clan 7 is a modern Chinese cuisine restaurant ran by young executive chef Dee Chan who previously worked in several hotels in Singapore.

We went for a family dinner by ordering several a la carte dishes.Would definitely recommend the Sichuan-style Cooked Garoupa Fillet 藤椒酸菜龙趸魚 ($38++), a very gentle interpretation of the classic Sichuan soup as it’s only mildly spicy but very tangy.
Smoked Cod Fish Fillet 摩登烟燻鱼 ($29++) is also one dish we like. The fish was damn crispy with hints of smokiness. Can’t tell it’s cod fish though as it's been so deep fried there was barely any meat. Other dishes we had was:
Marinated Jellyfish with Cucumber 陳年黑醋雲耳海蜇 ($12++)
Clan 7 Sichuan-style Hot and Sour Soup 黃金酸辣湯 ($6++). The bowl was extremely small.
Black Pepper Spanish Iberico Pork Cutlet 西班牙燒黑椒豬排 ($28++). It is more of western pork ribs with chinese sauce.
Sauteed Angus Sliced Beef, Broad Bean Paste 蔥爆安格斯牛肉 ($28++)
Moutai-Chicken with Distilled Chinese Liquour in Claypot 茅台雞煲 ($22++)
Sauteed French Beans, Minced Pork, Dried Shrimp 乾煸肉碎蝦米四季豆 ($15++)
Yang Zhou Fried Rice with BBQ Pork and Shrimp 楊州炒飯 ($15++)

Overall food is good and would appeal to those who like heavy robust flabors as most of the dishes (except the fried rice) were pretty salty and rich. That said they do go very well with white rice. Would discourage anyone from ordering the beef, moutai chicken, smoked fish, and Iberico pork cutlet at the same time as the flavors are generally overlapping and quite similar. Prices are not too cheap but great for once in a while indulgence!

Tomi Sushi Novena : Hearty Japanese Set Lunches

$

If you are looking for Japanese set lunches here in Singapore that was originated from Japan, Tomi Sushi is one of the places you could head to. All of their sets come with Koshihikari rice, chawanmushi, miso soup, salad and fruit. The restaurant itself is also quite family-friendly, evidenced by all the families with kids dining there on weekends.
One of the most expensive set on the lunch menu would be Anago Nigiri Gozen ($45++).
If you are looking for a cheaper option, Chirashi Lunch ($25++) would be a good choice.
Besides a good row of sushi, Sushi Bento ($38++) also comes with tempura, fried saba fish and sashimi. A decent option for those who wanna try a little bit of everything.
BTW, do not order the Hiya Yakko (Chilled Tofu) from their Grand menu. It tastes like tofu taken right out of the box without any flavor and cost us $7++.
Though it may not be the cheapest Japanese restaurant, however, Tomi Sushi is certainly worth a try if you were in the Novena area. They also have two other outlets at Millenia Walk and Katong.

HOLA! MEXICO: Mexican Cuisine in Orchard

$

When it comes to Mexican food, it's usually burritos, nachos, and tacos for me and the visit to HOLA Mexico broadened my understanding of Mexican food.
One of the mains we tried was Tex-Mex in a Bowl - Lamb Fajita ($24++). The term Tex-Mex stands for Texan and Mexican, and describes a type of popular cuisine which is a blend of Mexican, Spanish and American cuisine. It's a bit like the burrito bowl from those fast food shops with Romaine lettuce, grilled peppers, onions, corns, beans, salsa, roasted chilli, avocado, tomatos, mexican rice, and choice of meat. Very hearty and full of flavors.
The other we had was El Norte Fajitas - Chicken ($24++). A Fajitas is any stripped grilled meat with stripped peppers and onions that is usually served on a tortilla. Yes, all those you see are not fries but well marinated chicken sticks, definitely a pick for meat lovers. The flour tortilla goes well with Guacamole and red salsa provided at the side.
Overall the food is good and suitable for those who wanna try out even more different Mexican food or alchoholic drinks. Prices are not cheap but if you happen to have the Entertainer app, it would be more affordable.

A-Roy Thai Restaurant: Super Spicy and Shiok Tom Yum (Novena Velocity)

Another restaurant found through Google Maps review when visiting Novena area, and we've got to say that we were not disappointed. Everything from the servers to the Thai-inspired decor seemed to suggest some authenticity in the food here.

Tord Man Pla ($3.90++ per piece) was surprisingly good. The Thai fish cake is freshly fried  and piping hot. It's tasty on its own without the side dipping sauce.
The Chips ($1++, we only found out after we paid) behind was automatically served when you sit down. To be honest it was quite shiok when you dip with the green chilli sauce and we ended finishing all despite we usually don't eat too much fried snacks. Tom Yum Talay ($15.90++) is the clear soup type Seafood Tom Yum. This is definitely one of the most spiciest ones we had in Singapore. Be warned
Pad Kee Maw ($9.90++) is beef (other choices available) stir fried kway teow with chili, basil leaves and some slice of vegetables. It tasted a bit like Chinese fried style with oyster sauce but a much spicier version. Not bad but it is not something we will have again.
Overall, food is authentic but not cheap. If you are a spicy-lover, you shouldn't miss out this one.

Izakaya Shinjuku: Everyday $12.5 nett Japanese Lunch Set at Orchard (Somerset)

If you are looking for a good value for money Japanese lunch set in Orchard area, Shinjuku is a place you wouldn't want to miss out. The dining space has quite a good Japanese atmosphere and there is a daily special lunch item which will usually be announced on its official website in advance.
BUTA KIMCHI ITAME + KABOCHA NIMONO 豚キムチ炒め&かぼちゃの煮物 was the daily lunch special on the day of our visit. The main dish Pan-fried Pork with Kimchi comes with Simmered Pumpkin, pickles, japanese rice, miso soup and dessert of the day-cheese cake. The pan-fried pork wasn't exactly a Japanese dish but it tasted homey and good.
Besides the daily special lunch set, there is also a regular lunch menu. We tried out the Nabe Yaki Udon Set ($16.50++) which comes with Tempura, side dish and fruit.
Overall, the food here feels a bit more like home cooking style and does not cost a bomb.

Mun Zuk 满粥: Pricey porridge in Novena Velocity

I always think that aircon is a must when having porridge in Singapore. Mun Zuk is a brand under Li Fang Congee 丽芳粥品 but located in a mall, which makes it convenient to try. The waiting time was a bit long for both the dine-in seats and cooking time during weekday peak hour.
The Creamy Trio Egg Congee 奶滑三蛋粥 ($6.1+), which included soft boiled egg, century egg & salted egg, was extremely salty. Was disappointed as it contained all my fav ingredients. Ala carte orders do not come with Youtiao 油條 and it's sad to know you have to add on $1.8+ for that, which comes bundled with a drink.
Added $4 worth of meatballs to this congee which sets the bill to over $1 :(
Meatball Sliced Pork Congee 肉丸肉片粥 ($5.5+) was better but the meatballs and slices were sparse.
Steam Pork Ribs ($3.2+) is a side dish which was average. It was not served in the bamboo steamer as on menu.
Overall taste was not bad but pricey. Both of us were extremely thirsty the rest of the day after we ate at noon.

Enjoy Eating House and Bar 享受: Food Delivery Experience

This modern Chinese Zichar restaurant was recommended by one of the foodie youtuber we followed and was mentioned as the best she had in Singapore, so we decided to give it a try. As the outlet is a bit far away from my place, we decided to order via Ordereats delivery service.
We ordered quite a few dishes but wanted to highlight some of them. Perhaps due to delivery, their signature King Tiger Prawns in Singapore-Style Chilli Sauce 新加坡招牌辣椒酱大虎虾 ($28.30) did not have the wow factor as many reviews claimed but they still can't go wrong with fried mantou-dipping (4pcs@$2)!
Another one is the Silky Egg Seafood Crispy Hor Fun 滑蛋炸河粉 ($14). The fried hor fun is actually flat rice noodles fried to a crisp, topped with pork, prawns, squid and shitake mushrooms in a rich egg sauce. Interesting interpretation but we still prefer the classic horfun.
It was quite jelat after a few bites.
Grandma’s “Te Kah” Bee Hoon 招牌猪脚米粉 ($14.30) is tender braised pork leg wok-fried with vermicelli.
The overall taste was good and at more of the sweet side. Do take note that the delivery could be a bit off the scheduled time. Would want to try dine-in next time as they have a lot of special dishes we haven't tried yet.

618 SIM Carrot Cake: One the Best White Carrot Cake in Singapore (Khatib)

Finally had the chance to try this Chai Poh carrot cake and it’s really fragrant and yummy. We had the $5 one with prawns (small) for dine in and dabao $4.50 (large, eggs only) version back. Both servings were SO generous and could easily share between 2-3 people.
Thought the carrot cake would be drowned by the Chai Poh but it wasn’t as much as I expected. Not a bad thing cos too much will be quite overpowering. This was just nice!
Would order the $4.50 without the prawns next time.
Took almost 50 mins on a early weekday from placing order to getting the food but we didn’t wait much as we went to Block 928 for Laksa and back for carrot cake. As per their FB page, carrot cake is usually sold out everyday early so do estimate your time of arrival.

Unexpectedly chanced upon Jian Zao Ipoh Curry Noodles at Jalan Besar which seemed to open recently in the same place where Victor Fried Chicken and Mui Siong Minced Meat Noodles are in. And there was no queue during my visit at lunch time!
My first encounter with them was at their 1st outlet at Ang Mo Kio, where I visited Chao Zhou Teochew Fish Soup 潮粥 and Shinjitsu Ramen in the same coffee shop, and saw the crazy long queue.
Had the signature Ipoh curry noodles ($5.50) which was covered with pork belly, char siu slices, topped by shredded chicken, French beans and tau pok. The curry wasn’t too spicy. An aromatic bowl both looks and tastes delicious. Very value of money and will be back to try out their dry version.

Grillhood Mains X Desserts: Cafe with Fusion Cuisine near Lentor (TE5)

Located in a short walk from Lentor MRT exit 4 and sitting under the HDB block, Grillhood Mains X Desserts is a hidden gem for variety of Western and Asian dishes. I believe they changed their entire menu somewhere in late 2021 from a Western food dominated menu.
C.M.F Quesadilla ($10.9) is the most recommended dish from Google Maps reviewers and indeed it was delicious. There's cheese, chicken and mushroom accompanied with tangy salsa sauce. The portion is more than enough for one pax. We also tried:
The Moo Burger ($13.9)
Korean Kimchi Pork Collar ($14.9)- the pork collar has a gamey taste but the broth pairs well with rice; you could also change to prata.
Grilled Pork Collar ($14.9) - the chicken was quite salty on its own and made the black pepper sauce rather redundant.
Overall, we were very satisfied with their food. Will return for their other items on menu which include several daily specials. We were told to call and reserve in advance as seating is limited. No service charge and GST.

Tsukada Nojo 美人锅: Quality Collagen Hot Pot from Japan

Very late into the game as this was my first time trying out Tsukada Nojo and the quality of ingredients exceeded expectations. Ordered the Binjin Nabe Set ($25++ per pex) which comes with their famous Jidori chicken meat and meatball, prawn, and vegetable box. Sadly, we are only allowed to choose one soup base no matter the no. of people at the table and rice or noodles are not included.

Had the tomato collagen base which was so rich that one can feel the stickiness on the lips. Would be perfect if it could be much less salty. Their four different sauces are worth a dip despite the savoury soup.
We also added on Wagyu Beef ($25++) and Beauty Noodles ($4++) since there was neither carbs nor much meat in the set. The beef was a bit disappointing as it has large portion of fat which tasted like those cheap frozen beef short plate shabu shabu. While there was chicken bones and shrimp shells fully on the plate, they didn't change but instead kept taking away the dishes we finished.
Overall, the price isn’t cheap but we would consider coming back to try out their different flavour in maybe a longer time.

MilkFish Singapore 虱目魚: Raffles City and Millenia Walk

Noticed this fancy place for fish soup on the social media and paid a visit to the Milkfish restaurant in city area. Milkfish, as the fish itself, is one of the most popular fish in Taiwanese cuisine where popular presentations include as a topping for congee, pan fried, braised, and as fish balls. It is valued for its versatility as well as its tender meat and economical price.
We ordered the 2 pax set ($40++), which included 2 bowls of milkfish soups (fyi the size is smaller than the ala carte one), 1 grilled milkfish belly, 1 oriental salad in vinegar dressing, 4 pcs deep fried prawn roll, 6 pcs marinated chilled tomatoes, 2 choice of rice/noodles (the crispy rice sprinkles 'Pao Fan' is recommended!).
Their signature soup broth was smooth and milky with good amount of milkfish, prawn, clam and pork. The broth was flavorful but tasted just like a seafood-pork broth rather than one that is cooked purely with milkfish. I was expecting to taste the latter since the theme was afterall, milkfish. A closer read to the menu will reveal the fact that they actually outsourced the broth to Ao Broth.
The fried prawn roll (not in the photo) is like ngo hiang with prawn was fragrant but salty.
The grilled milkfish belly is highly recommended as it was fresh and the meat has pockets of soft belly fat.
Overall, the portion is more than enough for two of us and we were quite satisfied with the food and the dining atmosphere. However, it is not something that we can have everyday like fish soup/yong tau foo considering its price point.

The Durian Bakery is an online durian specialist that bakes only with fresh durians delivered from the plantation in Pahang, Malalysia.
I was surprised to see a good variety of durian cakes and durian pastries that can be delivered within 2 hours of order. Perfect if you like to have your special occasion cakes on the same day. The Classic Mao Shan Wang Durian Cake is a popular choice and I could see why. It's a minimalistic cake of fluffy vanilla sponge and generous amount of MSW durian that wasn't too heavy as a post-meal dessert.

I also had the signature durian dessert box which features 8 giant cream puffs that's stuffed with fresh MSW durian pulp, 1 pc Dark Chocolate MSW mousse and a box of 6 pcs D24 Snowy Mochi. The mochi skin had an excellent texture and one can't resist popping the entire thing into the mouth. The chocolate mousse gave a sugar rush and was the sweetest in the dessert box.
Truly rich and indulgent. Will definitely get the cream puffs if I order again!

Tea Tree Cafe is a brand that started from tea beverages and expanded to desserts such as Bo Bo Cha Cha and Grass Jelly Bowl. It has currently 9 outlets islandwide and I managed to try some of the desserts via delivery.
As for the chilled desserts, we tried the Signature bowl (choice of grass jelly as base) and the Coconut Bowl (choice of pudding as base). Both were refreshing and came with generous amount of toppings.
Overall, the quality of desserts were excellent and the pricing won't break your wallet. Between the hot and cold desserts, I would pick the hot desserts as they are more "gao" than those served by other common traditional dessert shops and yet not over cloying.
From the hot desserts selection, we had the Sesame Tang Yuan, Peanut Cream and Almond Cream. The first two were thick and creamy, boasting intensely nutty flavor while the Almond Cream was smooth and fragrant. One can rest assure that none of them was diluted at all and the sweetness was not too sweet, simply perfect.

Viio Gastropub: Tasty and Affordable Asia-French Cuisine in Balestier

$

The idea of Gastropub food is usually anything but exquisite or refined. And food expectations are low since it's more of a place for drinks. Yet Viio Gastropub in Balestier proved this wrong with its delicious and well-presented Asian-French dishes. But perhaps this is not surprising considering the background of the chef. The place is headed by chef Ronald Li, a LCB Paris graduate who used to serve at The Four Seasons Hotel, Michelin Star restaurant Andre, KU DE TA, Salt Tapas & Bar and The White Rabbit.

The menu comprises of tapas, pastas, mains and desserts. Our Sunday lunch started with Baked Charlotte Potato ($8 for 2). The steaming potato revealed a stretchy mozzarella core enmeshed with horseradish cream as we pry it open. The potato was exceedingly soft and being unseasoned on its own, it relied on the ikura, caviar and squid ink wafer for the flavors.
The 2nd tapas was Grilled Octopus ($28). The octopus chunks were tender, though E preferred them chewier as these were on the soft side. Wasn't expecting to have more potatoes again ( this was served on a bed of mashed potato and crispy potato croquette balls) but the overall flavor balance was good, especially with the caramelized sweetness of charred cherry tomatoes.

The Beef Ragout Gnocchi ($26) turned out to be a rather similar dish like the Grilled Octopus as the gnocchi tasted like the potato croquette. Would advise not ordering both at the same time.

We had the Angus Rib Eye ($42) as our mains and the meat was well executed. Black truffle added a light fragrance to the meat without overpowering it. That said the flavor profile bears close resemblance to the previous two dishes and would be great if the accompanying mushrooms were less salty.

Dessert was warm 70% dark chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream. Overall the food is tasty and we will be back to try other dishes next time.

Note: everything except the dessert reflects half a portion as the restaurant has kindly help to separate each dish into two portions as one of us could not take raw food at that point of time.
