Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Mee : A Taste of Old-School Charm

Old-school Wanton Mee, anyone?

Kai Kee Wanton Mee used to be located in Dover Road Market near Fairfield Methodist School before moving to Alexandra Village Hawker Centre in 2011. I first learnt about Kai Kee through one of the episodes on Makan Places: Lost and Found which was broadcasted years ago but only had the chance to drop by for a visit recently.

Worrying that the $2.50 serving might be too small, I ordered the $3 plate which was surprisingly generous for the noodles portion. Forget about perfect plating as the char siu are strewn all over and you might even have few strands of noodles on top of the char siu. It looks as messy as me when I just wake up but that's part of the charm.

The lean char siu were dry while the wantons were firm, chewy rather than tender and juicy. What shone through this plate was the noodles which had an excellent springy texture than any other wanton Mee that I can remember. In fact, they reminded me of the angel-hair like wanton Mee from Yap Kee @ Holland Village but these were glistening in a mixture of lard and sauce that prevented them from clumping together.

Perhaps it's precisely the thinness of the noodles that allow more sauce to cling on easily. As a result, the noodles do not shy of flavors though I find it a little too salty. They looked fiery and red, but none of the sweetness like those of a ketchup-based wanton mee. Neither were the noodles spicy even though we tossed them with chilli.

This is not one of those super delish wanton Mee out there, but probably one of those savoury, umami kind that we used to enjoy after school.
